Native to the UK, where it is known as "naked woman" it has also been discovered in the rest of Europe and New Zealand.
It is a small herbaceous perennial plant and the entire plant body, especially the seeds and bulbs, is highly poisonous.
The main poisonous chemical component is colchicine, an alkaloid that systematically destroys all vital functions of the body. Death can occur within a few days or within a week.
